I just wanted to give the fairly new Raro Video USA label a shoutout for releasing, during the darkest days of Italo-cult home video history, incredible, key Italian titles here in the USA! Their Fernando Di Leo Blu-Ray box set is completely essential and a definite upgrade to their previously released Italian DVD versions. They've also already given us a stellar Blu-Ray of Fellini's I Clowns that also comes highly recommended as well as an upgrade to Deodato's exploitation/crime classic Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man.

Rumor has it that Raro Video owns the rights to the rare Di Leo film Il Poliziotto è marcio (a/k/a Shoot First, Die Later) starring Luc Merenda and will eventually release it in a future Di Leo box set... I love Alice (a/k/a Alice Visconti, Carla Bissi). Her unique, deep voice is pretty incredible (right up there with Loredana Berte in my book!). I found her great self-titled LP about 6 years ago at a Michigan thrift store (along with a bunch of other Italian pop records from Patty Pravo and Ivan Cattaneo) and have played it many times over the years, but a recent YouTube binge has revived my interest in her music and other albums I've yet to hear. It's a shame she never worked on any soundtrack music with the likes of Ennio Morricone or Riz Ortolani as this surely would have been staggeringly excellent. Check out these great video clips:

Commedia Sexy All'Italiana - Book + CD

This nice-looking hardcover book from Mediane deserves to be on the shelf of any self respecting Italian cult film fanatic. It offers up over 330 pages of on-set and behind the scenes photos (many nude) of all of our favorite Italian 'sexy comedy' starlets (Lilli Carati, Gloria Guida, Laura Antonelli, Edwige Fenech, Nadia Cassini, etc.). Although not all of the photos shown are from comedies, and some are of the male stars of these films (Lino Banfi, Bombolo, etc.), this in no way detracts from the enjoyment of thumbing through this immense collection of sexy photos.

Also included is a compilation CD of various cues from the films themselves (included in a paper sleeve on the inside back cover). The highlight of the CD is the song sung by Gloria Guida from the film L'infermiera di notte!

This has been available since 2007, so get it before it goes out of print (beware, the CD only version is also available, so make sure you get the version w/ the book!)

Just found this one collecting dust from a lot of unsorted posters I got a while back and noticed it was directed by Silvio Amadio. Amadio will always be most remembered by me for his films starring Gloria Guida: Il medico... la studentessa (1976), Peccati di gioventù (1975), Quella età maliziosa (1975), and La minorenne (1974 - my personal favorite and definitely worth seeking out ASAP)

As for this 'Three Musketeers' film, I have no idea...but it does star George Wang, the excellent asian character actor who was often cast as a Mexican villain in plenty of Italian westerns!

Just a quick heads up: There is a new DVD release of the film Quando l'amore è sensualità by Cecchi Gori in Italy that has a hidden English audio track. I've never seen the film, but will always eagerly check out anything from this era especially if it includes an English audio track or subtitles. You can order a copy here. Here's a '2f' poster for an obscure Umberto Lenzi sex-comedy made after his crime-dramas of the late 70s and just before 'Eaten Alive' and 'Cannibal Ferox'! This film has never been available in English, and is still not available on DVD as of this post. After seeing Lenzi's highly enjoyable film 'Cicciabomba' (available on DVD as 'Fatty Girl Goes to New York'), I'm really eager to see the few other comedies he made during this time - and the image on this poster makes this film look like a winner.

I know I've been slacking on blog posts, but I felt it was important to jump in and say, R.I.P. Rino Di Silvestro who sadly died on October 3rd of cancer. In his memory, here's a rare locandina for his film 'Prostituzione'. Di Silvestro will mainly be remembered for the incredibly sleazy films 'Werewolf Woman' (La lupa mannara, his finest work!), Deported Women of the SS Special Section (Le deportate della sezione speciale SS), Hanna D. The Girl from Vondel Park (soon to be issued on DVD by Severin Films, and is one of my most anticipated titles of the year), and Women in Cell Block 7. His small filmography will always hold a place in the hearts of all fans of 70s Italian sleaze. Rino, you will be missed!

a/k/a 'And God said to Cain', this is a severely underrated Italian western that is truly one of the all time best in my book. Stars Klaus Kinski in an actual lead role, and not just a quick cameo appearance as with his usual Italian films of the time. Filled with gothic horror elements and a strange location (set mostly at night in a town that is anticipating an oncoming tornado), it is at heart a classic revenge theme with Kinski just being released from prison to take revenge on the man who framed him. Excellent film that should be seen by anyone with even a passing interest in the western genre.

a/k/a 'Hole in the Forehead', this is an excellent, violent western from that classic year of 1968 where so many great ones were born. The companion film, 'Django the Last Killer', also directed by Giuseppe Vari and starring Anthony Ghidra, is pretty much essential as well. There's a German DVD of 'Buco...' available but it unfortunately uses the German audio along with hard to follow subtitles that gradually become worse and worse "broken English" as the film progresses. Still worth seeking out until a better version comes along.

Italian locandina for this rare "erotic drama" from Tonino Cervi (Queens of Evil). I watched this in Italian via the subpar AVANZ Japanese DVD that is incorrectly framed and features a very annoying watermark in the bottom corner during the entire film. The visuals are great and the score is good, but I honestly missed a lot due to the lack of English options. The leading ladies are nice to look at however, but sadly the film never revels in complete sexuality as this poster image hints at.

Here is a rare, original Italian locandina for 'Top Sensation' (a/k/a 'The Seducers'), a highly sought after erotic film from 1969 that has the honor of being the only film to feature both Rosalba Neri and Edwige Fenech together in lead roles (the consesus being that they are the two sexiest women of Italian cult films in the 70s). Here's an ugly locandina for the Ferdinando Baldi 3-D sci-fi adventure film, Treasure of the 4 Crowns (Made right after his other 3-D film, a western called Comin' at Ya!). Baldi, who made plenty of excellent westerns in the 60's and early 70's, would go on to make only 3 films after this.

The film features Tony Anthony in the lead, who is most famous for his role in Blindman (also by Baldi), as well as a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.

Our friends at Fin de Siècle Media have released a new DVD of the rarely seen film Flashman, now with English audio! This release also has a great looking anamorphic transfer that is sure to please fans of late 60's european super-hero films.

Unfortunately this DVD has forced Swedish subtitles, but they aren't too distracting once you get into the film (please note that this is the only way to see the film with English audio in this high of quality). There is also an original Italian audio track available for the purists.

Wow! I finally got a copy of this from the German label / soundtrack mailorder, Chris' Soundtrack Corner, and this one is probably the most essential soundtrack release in a long time. Three of Stelvio Cipriani's famous Italian crime film scores are melded together by their similar driving and dynamic themes across this 70 minute, 24 track CD. We get selected tracks from each (including 16 previously unreleased tracks) and it all flows as seemingly one soundtrack since all 3 films share similar sounding themes.

If you order this direct from the label, you have a chance to score a limited edition version with a nice silkscreened jewel case that looks great against the cover art on the insert booklet.

2 more entries of the Nico Giraldi saga have surfaced with English audio from Germany's Sunfilm Entertainment! Squadra antitruffa, and Squadra antimafia.

This company has released most of the other titles in the series, but these 2 discs as well as Squadra antigangsters, are the only 3 so far with English audio. I've watched 'antimafia' and 'antigangsters' so far, and they look as good, if not better than the Italian Medusa discs. All of the prints used for these DVDs have the original Italian titles as well. Overall, highly recommended. Click the links above to purchase.

It's been a long time since my last update - I just moved across the country and was dealing with all the things that go with it. Still unpacking, and have some new Italian posters to post up here, but for now I thought I'd share this rare one with you...

Here are the mp3s of the self-titled Japanese LP (SEVEN SEAS/CGD/CAM - SR 453) by Italian actor Ray(mond) Lovelock (Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man, Last House on the Beach, Queens of Evil, etc.). This LP is packaged in a great looking, unique gatefold jacket, that acts as a booklet with multiple pages of Japanese text as well as color photos:

You've gotta love Ray's broken English, and sentimental ballads... Not as immediately enjoyable as the songs from his more often heard singles (Maggie, anyone?), but to these ears they are just as good if not better (especially track 6 which reminds me of the Genesis song 'In the Wilderness' from their first album). Side B is the soundtrack to the film 'Plagio' with Ray performing some late 60s garage-rock and lounge music (dialogue from the film is sandwiched in between all of the 6 songs. I left this side of the LP as one continuous track, the same way that the LP is mastered).

A/K/A 'Today it's Me, Tomorrow it's You'. An obviously cheaply made western that doesn't star Bud Spencer in the lead role as the locandina suggests, but a Franco Nero/Django lookalike named Brett Halsey (who appeared in a similar role the same year in 'L'Ira di Dio', or 'Wrath of God') who was recently released from prison with only revenge on his mind. An entertaining film for fans of Spaghetti Westerns (it was co-scripted by Dario Argento), but the cheap looking set design, the strange, semi drawn out finale located in a boring, wintery forest, and a lack of really likable characters make this one passable when compared to some of the other classics of the genre. Available on DVD from multiple companies here, as well as a Japanese disc here.

A/K/A 'Naked Violence', this is one of Fernando Di Leo's first films. A crime/drama/thriller hybrid with lots of police procedural scenes including cross-examinations of an entire class of boys who were present during the rape/murder of their teacher in a classroom. Available on a nice looking anamorphic DVD from Raro Video that includes English subtitles, and is on par with the quality of the other Di Leo films the company has also released.

This locandina appears to be silkscreened, and looks and feels similar to my Last House on the Left locandina.

Here is the rare and much sought after Cinevox LP soundtrack to 'La ragazza dal pigiama giallo' (a/k/a 'The Pyjama Girl Case'). After numerous requests from friends and fans for an mp3 of the title track, I decided to make the entire soundtrack available (at least until a CD reissue emerges). Enjoy!

Please note that I did not create these mp3's from my personal copy - they were taken from another fan a few years ago before I owned an actual copy on vinyl. La Mala ordina (1972)

Quite possibly Fernando Di Leo's finest film, that includes all of the blood pumping action, revenge, and nihilism one would expect along with great characters and a memorable soundtrack by Armando Trovajoli. The film stars Mario Adorf as a low level pimp, Luca Canali, on the run from NYC mafia hitmen (Henry Silva and Woody Strode) who have pinned him for interfering with their Italian drug business. However, he is the wrong man, and everyone has underestimated the survival instinct and luck of Canali as he fights back with a bloody vengeance.

Truly great on so many levels, this is a film that should be viewed immediately if you've managed to avoid it so far. It's been available under many video titles including 'Manhunt', 'The Italian Connection', 'Black Kingpin', and 'Hit Men', but the ultimate version is the Italian DVD release from Raro Video under it's original title 'La Mala ordina'. This DVD is English friendly, and available here or here.

New 'Matalo!' Italian DVD

I just got a copy of the new Italian DVD of Matalo! released by Medusa. I was eagerly anticipating this since the U.S. DVD released by Wild East a few years ago was riddled with prominent compression artifacts, and was non-anamorphic. This new Italian disc by Medusa looks amazing, is anamorphic, and is a 100% improvement over the U.S. disc. The only drawback to some will be that there are no English options (there are, however, subtitles in Italian for the hearing impaired) but with this film, the dialogue really does take a back seat to the stunning camera work, surreal imagery, the excellent soundtrack by Mario Migliardi, and the overall bizarre atmosphere that has been compared by some to a bad acid trip.
Overall, this is an essential buy for fans of the film, and is probably the best version of the film we're likely to see (unless the rumored Koch Media release of this comes out with English subtitles). The extras include the original Italian trailer and a Nocturno produced interview with director Cesare Canevari (In Italian w/ Italian subtitles). Get your copy here.

Fabio Testi 'Palma de Majorca' (1984)

A hilarious, startling photo of an aging Fabio Testi graces the sleeve to this rarely seen 1984 45rpm vinyl single from Italy. I originally saw proof of its existence in this video, and didn't stop until I found it. Now, you too can listen to the infectious 80's pop grooves and become hypnotized by the stunning cover photo, that was surely plastered on every Italian schoolgirl's bedroom wall during 1984.

So, I finally found it - the Italian locandina for 'Un Verano para matar' (A/K/A 'The Summertime Killer')! Although not in the best condition, I've never seen one of these before and couldn't pass it up. I'm still looking for 2f or 4f Italian cinema posters of this one (if they even exist?) so get in touch if you have any leads.

Here's a fittingly ugly locandina for Joe D'amato's X-rated sleaze/horror classic A/K/A 'Erotic Nights of the Living Dead'. Another absurd and highly entertaining (or revolting, depending on your frame of mind) zombie/sex film made back to back with the lesser 'Porno Holocaust'. The film throws almost all exploitative elements together with zero budget and manages to create something surreal and very memorable (ie - de-corking of a champagne bottle via vagina). Stars both George Eastman and Laura Gemser!

A/K/A 'Stateline Motel'. A crime/drama starring Fabio Testi as a car thief who has just been released from prison. Along with his partner, Eli Wallach, they rob a jewelery store and make off with a load of diamonds. After a top-notch car chase sequence through the streets of Montreal (made all the better by the music of Luis E. Bacalov), the 2 thieves split up and agree to meet across the border and split the jewels. Things go wrong when Testi, the jewel carrier, drives his car off the road and is stuck at the 'Last Chance Motel' while the car gets repaired. Eli Wallach then comes looking for him and the diamonds...

There's a rough looking DVD available that appears to be a fullscreen VHS transfer. Definitely worth a look though, if only for the great car chase and soundtrack.

Here's a huge Italian '4f' cinema poster (55" x 78"!) of Stelvio Massi's 'La Banda del trucido' (A/K/A 'Destruction Force). A sort of sequel to the film 'Il Trucido e lo sbirro' that also features Tomas Milian in the 'Monnezza' role. There's a nice looking Italian DVD, but it has no English options.

Here's an Italian locandina for the Michael Winner film 'The Mechanic' starring Charles Bronson as a hitman who takes on Jan-Michael Vincent as his apprentice. Filled with plenty of violence and impressive explosions/action sequences, this film is yet another of the Winner/Bronson films that stands out as a classic (also see 'Death Wish', 'Death Wish 2' & 3, 'Chato's Land', as well as 'The Stone Killer').

Here's a Mexican one-sheet poster for 'Un Verano para matar' (A/K/A 'The Summertime Killer'). This Spanish/Italian co-production stars one of my favorites, Christopher Mitchum (Ricco the Mean Machine, Murder in a Blue World, Faceless) who is out for revenge on those who murdered his father. A unique action/revenge/love story hybrid, this movie is definitely a fun ride, and can be found on DVD only via an expensive, now out of print, Japanese disc (Amazon.jp may still have copies). There's also an out of print soundtrack CD that you can still find if you search online (under the Italian title 'Ricatto alla mala'). It's one of Bacalov's finest soundtracks and one that I listen to all the time.

I'm still searching for the Italian locandina of this film, as 'Ricatto alla mala', so if anyone has one for sale, let me know, and I will immediately shell out some cash. THANKS!

Poliziotti violenti (1976)

One of the few crime films directed by Michele Massimo Tarantini (he also directed Napoli si ribella, starring Luc Merenda), this one maintains the 'comic book' style of the previously mentioned film and features over the top violence with pretty much non-stop action. Stars Henry Silva as an Army Major and policeman Antonio Sabato as they team up to stop a series of crimes that used a special military-only type of machine gun. I've never seen the film in English, but it didn't matter because the story is easy to follow and the action flows along with the great soundtrack by the De Angelis brothers. There's a really cheaply priced Italian DVD available that looks great, and is highly recommended.

Here is the locandina for Enzo Castellari's classic crime film A/K/A 'Street Law'. One of the finest examples of Italian crime/action films, this one features a great, over-the-top performance by Franco Nero as well as an excellent, infectious score by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis.
